Like the three points in a triangle, knowing your value, maintaining your value, and getting compensated for your value are essential in building professional stability and longevity. If the compensation or the opportunity sounds too good to be true – it probably is. Sooner or later, reality prevails over rhetoric.

About This Quote

Compensation and opportunity are two of the most important things in life. Without compensation, we can’t afford to live our lives or do our jobs. Without opportunities, we can’t take advantage of the compensation we receive. The more we experience the world of work, the more we realize that compensation is often not what it appears to be.

For instance, on a sales call, a salesperson may be told by a client that his compensation will be $100 for every new client he gets and $25 per hour on an ongoing basis. The client also mentions that he will receive bonuses if his sales goals are met on a monthly basis and makes sure to tell you that these goals are totally up to you. However, as soon as you sit down with the client and begin discussing his business needs, you find out that he has some financial issues and needs your help in resolving those issues before he can commit to new contracts.

When this is all said and done, the client still does not have enough money to live on. So, what happened here? Did everything go as expected? Did they make a nice commission on a few contracts? No! In fact, they didn’t make any money at all! Let’s use another example: You make a recommendation to a potential employer who tells you that he expects you to join him at his company within one year upon receiving your background check results.
